Tasting: Milk River Cafe

I was invited out by my friend Raeshon to see his band play at a tasting for a new restaurant on Atlantic Avenue this past Tuesday. As usual, I was glad to see RGK2 play but I was really happy about being able to try out a new restaurant in my neighborhood. So, my mom and I walked the few blocks over to try out Milk River.

The head chef and co-owner, La-Niece Lyew has also worked at Umi Nom (which is across the street from my house) and Mercer Kitchen (fancy!).

For an appetizer, my mom ordered the “Middle Quarters” Spicy Peel & Eat Gulf Shrimp” for an appetizer…

which I thought was just like eating Jamaican pepper shrimp (with the peeling and everything).

I ordered the Prince Edward Mussels which were gret; perfectly portioned!

My mom’s main dish was Steamed Cod in Black Bean Vinagrette and Sauteed Bok Choy.

She said it was tender and had great flavor but she said she wished she had rice to go with it.

I ordered the Classic Fried Chicken and Waffles. The waffles were soft and the chicken was fried hard just the way I like it.

Because we were at a free tasting, my mom and I had to share dessert. Unfortunately, my mom missed that part of our waitresses speech and ordered the flan, which I had just reminded her that I hate. I don’t know how I missed my mom ordering it.

My mom liked it. I won’t even give my review of it (I tasted it just because it was there) because I hate ALL FLAN. I heard from friends who tasted the Milk Bar and Tres Leche that both of those dishes were great.

I’ll definitely be heading back to Milk River soon to try out the other desserts.
