::UPDATE:: BAM and Uncle Ralph Host Late Night Dance Party

Sunday, May 19th, 2013 at 2:23 pm

Seems like next weekend will be the dance party weekend of May. The Do Over is on Sunday and I just found out that Dance Africa at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) will be holding a free, late night dance party on Saturday hosted by uncle Ralph McDaniels.

Creator of the groundbreaking television program Video Music Box—the first and longest show to cover hip-hop and urban music and culture—Brooklyn-bred “video visionary” (The Village Voice) Ralph McDaniels has been a pioneering hip-hop tastemaker for three decades and counting. Uncle Ralph takes over the turntables and visuals with Video Mix Live at BAMcafé, where he’ll be laying down soul, funk, R&B, dancehall, and hip-hop beats until 3am. — via BAM.org

Almost one year after the first party of 2012, the Do Over will be back in Brooklyn! I’ve been waiting a few weeks for the official announcement of the location and guests DJs but a bit of digging led me to that info.

The Do Over, a huge day party featuring some of the most notable musical artists and DJs will be held Sunday, May 26, 2013 at The Well in Williamsburg.

Dinner: Deniz

Monday, May 6th, 2013 at 11:33 am

Last week I went to dinner with my friend Jia and her son Andre. She picked Deniz, a Meditteranean restaurant I pass all the time. Many times, it’s almost completely empty. That normally means the food is nasty so I was really surprised when I got my plate.

The food was fantastic!

Low-Income Mercedes House Apartments

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013 at 1:03 pm

Although I’ll probably be living in the apartment I’m in now for the next 10 years (unless I have kids before then), I periodically check the NYC housing lotteries to see what’s out there. On NYC’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) website, advertisements for different places in the five boroughs are listed, sometimes including apartments in new, luxury buildings.

One of those listings now includes availabile apartments at Mercedes House on West 53rd/54th Street and 10th Avenue.

Available apartments now range from $3,450 for a one-bedroom to $4,450 for a two-bedroom. Through HPD’s 80/20 program, 20% of the apartments in the building are designated for low-income residents. Although the 20% will be paying considerably less than the 80% in rent, they have access to all the same amenities.

National Bicycle Day

Friday, April 19th, 2013 at 11:00 am

I was going to buy a bike last summer but then I bought a car, and now, bikers annoy scare me. Still, it doesn’t seem like they’ll be leaving NYC’s streets anytime soon. About a week ago, I noticed that, not one but two of DOT’s new CitiBike stations were installed on my block.

In honor of National Bicycle Day, I ask this:

People in Bensonhurst, Brownsville, Far Rockaway, and South Jamaica (a.k.a. the ungentrified neighborhoods) don’t like to ride bikes?

Grits and Biscuits is Back this May

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013 at 11:29 am

and tickets are already sold out at TicketMaster.com. They went up to $29 from $19 per ticket (if I remember correctly) so I wasn’t sure about paying for my ticket in advance anyway.

I’ve heard that if you get to Irving Plaza early (around 8pm), you can pay at the door. If you’re completely confused and have no idea what “Grits and Biscuits” is, look below…

AssataSAYS.com Refreshed

Monday, April 15th, 2013 at 1:26 pm

Since this blogs inception in 2007, it’s been a better reflection of me than any mirror ever could be. Over the last 6 years (OMG! It’s been 6 years!!) I’ve covered most things important to me from fashion, music, food, celebrity gossip, and everything in between. I covered my college graduation, the move out of my mom’s house into my first apartment, and the birth of my Godson Shawn.

Whenever there’s been a major turning point in my life, it’s been chronicled here either through series of posts or, lack thereof.

then vs. now

Well, more changes have been happening and AssataSAYS.com has gotten an update! See the new picture?
