My Week in Vegas

Last week, I celebrated my 25th birthday in Las Vegas with my mom. The day of my birthday was also the first day of lectures at the 2013 International Baking industry Exposition (IBIE). I used the week to take a much needed break from New York, to celebrate my 25th year on this earth, and to learn a little more to help grow my business.

Above is my week of food (some real and some fake) in pictures. The IBIE took over the north side of the Las Vegas Convention Center and filled it with some of the largest cooking, baking, and packing machinery as well as the sweetest pies I’ve ever tasted. I was in a bakers paradise.

Lovely isn’t it? To see more from my trip (including video from The Gun Store), look below…

The first lecture I sat through was on handling complaints and the speaker was Renee Rouwhorst, owner of Ryke’s Bakery in Michigan. This mug from her bakery was probably one of the coolest things I saw the whole time I was at the IBIE.

On the night of my birthday, my mom and I went to see the Michael Jackson “ONE” show by Cirque du Soleil which was the best show i’ve ever sat through. I danced in my seat the whole way through.

Because I had to travel to the convention center alone each day, I figured out how to get around town the easiest way possible; the bus. My mom and I took it most days. The picture below was from the top of a double-decker bus. We were headed to the Illusions show at the Riviera (which really was more of a comedy show with magic in it).

On our last full day, we visited The Gun Store. This was one of the places I was most looking forward to going to because I can’t shoot a handgun in New York. In Las Vegas, that isn’t the case. I finally got to shoot a Glock 19 and an AR-15.

I thought I’d like the handgun more but as you can see in the video above, I was surprised by the kickback. I was much better with the AR-15. I’m hoping I’ll get a chance to visit another range soon and get my skills up.

I had a GREAT birthday this year and I owe that especially to my mom. Also, thanks to all my family, friends, and co-workers who went out of their way to help make it a special one for me. To all the Libras out there, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
