…as an adult. I can’t remember doing a scavenger hunt since elementary school, so this is a first in my adult years. I wrote about NY based artist Jay Shells’ “Rap Quotes” installation last week. Well, in case you missed it, check here.
Shells said that he expected people to take the signs so…
I didn’t get to keep the sign above featuring lyrics from Pharoahe Monch’s “Queens” but I managed to find another. For more on that and Jay Shells’ future plans for the project, look below…
When I checked for the “Illegal Life” lyric around the corner from my job about 3 hours after I found the original article, it was already taken down. Whether it was taken down by a rap enthusiast or the city, I have no idea.
Check out more of my favorite lyrics/placements below… Want more?
Remember the #throwbackthursday photo I posted on Instagram with my mom and the necklace I made for her in pre-school (which she still has)? She’s been keeping that necklace in a Reebok Freestyle a.k.a. “5411” box since the early 90s. I remember my mom wearing 5411’s when I was young and wanting a pair so bad. I finally talked her into buying me a pair in 2007 (late, I know) when Reebok celebrated the Freestyle’s 25th Anniversary. I scratched them about 4 wears later at a ’92 party and haven’t worn them since.
Thanks to Erika P. of Reed Space, I got a new pair!!
I posted the pic above on Instagram with the comment “5411, size 7 in girls…” so it’s only right that I post this vid, too.

On Wednesday, I took a trip to the Exposure showroom to check out the Spring/Summer 2012 lines for the brands they represent. I just want to say that these ladies and gentlemen put in work. It wasn’t until I got ready to do this post and popped in the flash drive I was given with all of the press kits on it that I realized the drive also included a playlist of some hot ’90s joints. You guys can check the bottom of this post for the complete playlist.
The jacket above is from Dr. Martens. I didn’t get a chance to try it on (although I’m almost positive if it fit Brittany, It wouldn’t fit me anyway) but I can’t wait ’til it’s released! It’s probably the one piece I’m really excited about.
I switched from my crap-ass Blackberry to an iPhone about a month ago. One of my friends keeps teasing me about the case I have now. So, I’m trying to decide if I’ll go with a Good Wood case I’ve seen at Reed Space or go with one of the Incase designs I’ve seen. A few of these are up for sale now on GoIncase.com.

If you’re a long-time AssataSAYS.com reader, then you know how much I enjoy attending the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival every year. Well, that isn’t the only musical festival happening in Brooklyn. My mom went to the Fort Greene Festival last year and said she had a really good time. Earlier this year, I went to their kickoff party so I’m looking forward to heading over to Fort Greene Park this Saturday, June 25, 2011.
Brooklyn native, Mos Def is headlining the event. To find out more about the festival, click here.
And don’t think I forgot about the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Family Day (the main day of the festival) goes down Saturday, July 16, 2011 and Q-Tip is headlining. To find out more about that event, head on over to BrooklynBodega.com.
