If you follow my Twitter or Instagram account, then you know that I love to bake. Well, I finally found a reason to bake without consuming everything I make like a fat ass healthy, growing, young woman. Last December, I baked my signature Sweet Potato Pie Bites for Babeland’s Holiday event with Burlesque artist Darlinda Just Darlinda.

I’m happy to announce that I’ve linked up with the pioneering toy store again for a Valentine’s Day event next month.

If any of you made it to Raeana’s Naked Hearts event a couple of weeks ago, then you know what to expect. For those of you who have yet to taste my sweets, you’re in for a treat. I hope to see you all there!

For the second winter, holiday season in a row, I will be spending nearly all of my free time baking. If you follow me on Instagram (”AssataSAYS”, of course), Twitter, Facebook, or Tumblr, you’ve already seen the pictures of my peach cobblers, sweet potato pie bites, and apple pies. Well, if you’ve been eager to taste before placing an order of your own, you can come down to Babeland’s Soho store on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 and try out my sweet potato pie bites.

The event is completely free and should be a lot of fun. Babeland usually throws pretty nice parties and with my treats in tow, it’s sure to be a hit!

I swore that with the end of summer approaching (the first day of fall is Friday) I would stop hanging out so much. So far, the weather hasn’t been slowing me down as it normally does. A Very Vintage Weekend will have me down on Orchard this Friday so but I’ll be there even earlier for Corrente’s Trunk Show Marathon which features jewelry designer Lauren Wimmer this week.

Before Friday, I hadn’t been to a spoken word performance since that Writer’s Block Anniversary Party back in ‘08. I went to the Nuyourican Poets Cafe for the first time with friends on Friday for a Poetry Slam. I was surprised by how long the line was when I got there (nearly reaching the corner from mid-block) so I anticipated the show to be good.

And it was. (Photo Credit: Larry Luv)
The first poetry slam ever in New York City was held at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in 1989, and 20 years later, we’ve become part of the cultural history of this city, still going strong. Today’s Nuyorican Poetry Slam is the result of our tradition of talented hosts, amazing performers and heart-stopping performances. Each one has helped to develop the legendary Poetry Slam reputation that is associated with the Cafe around the world. — via Nuyorican.org
The night was hosted by Chanel (not the regular host, Mahogany Browne) and featured artists from as close as New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and as far away as England (with slam judges from Australia!). You’re not supposed to take photos or videos in the space so, no previews here.
The Slam happens every Friday at 10pm and tickets are $10. As their site suggests, it’s a good idea to show up early. “The Nuyorican Friday Night Poetry Slam is pretty popular and fills up fast, so please get in line early. (suggested arrival latest 9:15pm).”
