Real Brown Girls Interview

Tuesday, July 15th, 2014 at 1:00 pm

A few weeks ago I was contacted by, a new blog which will feature and support brown, female entrepreneurs. Turns out, I’m all three of those things! I want to thank the ladies of Real Brown Girls for taking the time to find me and learn a little more about me and what it is that I’m trying to do with AssataBAKES.

Here’s a snippet from my interview:

How did you come to be an entrepreneur? What has the process been like for you?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I sold trinkets, cookies, and homemade candy to my classmates in junior high school. I began working for two large corporations when I was 15 and I’ve continued working ever since. Starting my baking business was just next on the list of goals to accomplish. The process has been more than I expected but I’ve appreciated every second of it. I expect that this will be one of many businesses that I’m involved in within the next 20 years. — via

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting me and to all of my new supporters. I’m so appreciative to you all and I thank you for hanging with me through this journey :)

“Priorities” with 3WCircle and HerAgenda

Monday, November 18th, 2013 at 9:46 am

When Rhonesha hosted her last event on Next Gen Women Leaders, I met Caroline Scheinfeld, founder of 3WCircle, “a circle of real women who have real conversations and form authentic connections.” Part of what 3WCircle does is “create, connect and curate authentic conversations and real relationships between real women” to fill the void for “a non-preachy support network that encourages women to be honest about what they want.”

Last Tuesday I attended and helped cater an event for 3WCircle and HerAgenda. The conversation was “Love, Career, Babies, and Wellness: What Slices Are In Your Priority Pie?”

photo 4

photo 4

Guest speakers Kelly Hoey, Tai Beauchamp and Meryl Gabay all had some incredible words of wisdom which brought out a few spicy anecdotes from the other women in the room.

Three of the most important things I was able to get from the evening were to (1) remember that prioriteis shift, (2) know that there is a difference between feelings and instinct (and to always listen to/trust that instinct), and that (3) the best way to deal with fleeting happiness is to give back.

The next 3WCirlce conversation on “how to give to ourselves and fulfill our desires and purpose” will take place on Tuesday, December 10. To request an invite to this conversation, click here.

#BakedbyAssataSAYS Bake Sale, Part 3

Friday, July 19th, 2013 at 11:28 am

They say “third time’s the charm,” right? Well, I guess only time will tell if the third installment of my summer bake sale will be even more successful than the last two. In May it rained. In June I got a nasty sun burn on my shoulder. This time, I’m covering myself completely with sunblock and packing extra umbrellas! Rain or shine, this sale is going down! I hope to see you all there!

30 Days of Pescetarianism

Monday, April 16th, 2012 at 9:00 am

I’m sure that many of you create New Year’s resolutions every year. And like many people (including myself) you don’t keep, or even remember many of them by February. Well, thanks to all of those flash sale sites like and, I’ve been able to keep one major resolution I made in 2011.

That resolution was to start working out… like… for real. The e-card above represents a harsh reality but it’s my reality and since I’ve become fully aware of it, I’ve made working out a challenge for myself. Throughout 2011, I took yoga classes, kickboxing, and a few ab classes but since December, I’ve finally begun going to the gym religiously. But of course, living a healthy life isn’t just working out or eating healthy independent of each other. So, for the month of April, I’ve been trying out pescetarianism.

Wanna know more (because there’s definitely more), look below…

Cake Pop Wrap-Up

Friday, February 10th, 2012 at 1:40 pm

You guys might have seen my post or saw me tweet about the event I would be providing treats for at Babeland this past Tuesday. Well, I finally have the pics from that event and from Raeana’s Naked Heart event last month.

Raeana was nice enough to walk around and get a few shots from but the one above was taken from my seat behind my Cake Pop table at Babeland.

They were absolutely the star of the show; all of the Cake Pops and Cake Moms (Cake Pops, except without sticks) were gone within the first 20 minutes of the start of the party.

The guests enjoyed handmade Vodka and created pasties for Valentine’s Day.

For photos and video from the Naked Hearts event, look below…

Join the Nike Training Club

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 at 9:33 am

Sometime in December, Raeana told me about this new workout app she’d discovered for her iPhone and insisted that I get it. I wasn’t too open to the idea although I had been complaining for more than 6 months about how difficult it was to find a good exercise program.

One month later, and at least twice a week I’m posting images like the one above to my instagram, Twitter, and Facebook pages. They’re all from the Nike Training Club app.

Just as the homepage describes, it’s the closest thing to having a personal trainer right at home. There are a series of workouts ranging from 15 to 45 minutes targeting whichever body part(s) you wish to concentrate on. Plus, the more time you clock on the app, the more workouts that are opened up to you including yoga and workouts created by celebrity trainers like Jeanetter Jenkins and Ary Nunez.

Oh yea… did I mention the app is FREE?

Babeland, Bust Magazine, and Baked by Assata for V-Day

Friday, January 27th, 2012 at 9:55 am

If you follow my Twitter or Instagram account, then you know that I love to bake. Well, I finally found a reason to bake without consuming everything I make like a fat ass healthy, growing, young woman. Last December, I baked my signature Sweet Potato Pie Bites for Babeland’s Holiday event with Burlesque artist Darlinda Just Darlinda.

I’m happy to announce that I’ve linked up with the pioneering toy store again for a Valentine’s Day event next month.

If any of you made it to Raeana’s Naked Hearts event a couple of weeks ago, then you know what to expect. For those of you who have yet to taste my sweets, you’re in for a treat. I hope to see you all there!

2011 Birthday Freebies

Monday, October 3rd, 2011 at 11:10 am

Happy Birthday to ME!! Well… almost. My birthday isn’t until Thursday but a few companies have been helping to plan my birthday feasts for the last two weeks.

For the last 2 years, I’ve done “Birthday Freebie” posts and every year, I find more stores/companies that give away items to their customers or e-mail registrants on their birthday. Instead of doing a long, drawn out list, I’ve compiled the regulars with a few newbies and what they’re offering up for WONDERFUL LIBRAS birthday-havers everywhere.

Moe’s Southwest Grill – Complimentary Entree

Benihana – Free Meal (unfortunately, the Manhattan location is closed for renovations so there will be no Hibachi for me this year)

Brasserie 8 1/2 (Patina Group) – $50 off a meal of $50 OR more (Patina Group restaurants offering $50 off include Brasserie 8 1/2 and 6 others. Two more Patina Group restaurants offer $30 off.  For my [very] brief review of Brasserie 8 1/2, click here.)

Red Lobster – $5 off a two-person meal (CHEDDAR BAY BISUITS, HERE I COME!!)

Starbucks – Free Birthday Beverage (and other free promo items throughout the year; I got a post card about 2 weeks ago for a free bagel w/spread)

Panera Bread – Free Pastry or Sweet
Cold Stone Creamery – BOGO Free Creation (in years past, there was no “BOGO,” you would just get a free Like-It Creation)
Baskin Robbins – Free ice cream scoop

SHOPPING – $25 credit
Rent the Runway – $20 credit
Daffy’s – 15% off (and 10% when you first register)
DSW – $5 off certificate

Sephora – Varying free items (last year it was mascara and eye make-up, this year it’s shampoo, shower gel, and bubble bath)

Aside from finding more freebies every year, I also find more Libras (which in case you haven’t figure out, I am). Happy Birthday to all of the Libras celebrating another year on earth includinggggggg:

My bestie Raeana R.
Deadstock Ric
My baby cousin “Little” Jr.
My older cousin “Big” Jr.
My downsouth cousin Rakili
My DC cousin Christian
Lakita of GFC
Vintage Shaun
Quincy Girl, Chan’nel
Avid reader, Asia!
My little sister Taylor
Fellow Fashion High grad, Estephanie
and a bunch more whose names escapy me now.

My Nate Berkus Segment

Friday, September 16th, 2011 at 8:58 am

I was excited and anxious all day long waiting for my segment on The Nate Berkus Show to air and when it did, I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. In case you missed it, I recorded the segment with my camera and uploaded it to YouTube. Check me out at the 4:50 mark. Sorry for the sucky sound quality. I tried.

Thanks again to Cara for making this possible! Fellow blogger and “thrift shopping guru” Patrice Williams was on the show talking about how to snatch great fashion pieces at remarkebly low prices. She did so great and got so many hits to her site following the shows airing that her site crashed! That is one happy problem for any blogger. Check her out at

I was talking about my prior TV experiences earlier on Twitter and Dwight dug up this old clip of he, Raeana, and I at the TRL Awards 6 years ago. Check it out below…

Westside Pistol Range with Mom

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011 at 10:39 pm

Yesterday, my mom and I finally redeemed our KGB Deal for a trip to Westside Pistol Range. The closest I’d come to shooting a real gun before my trip to WPR was shooting targets for a crappy stuffed animal at Six Flags.

Assata R.

The Westside Pistol Range is the last indoor gun range in Manhattan. It’s normally $65 for a non-members first trip to the WPR but through KGB, my mom and I got to go for $32.50 a piece. We sat through a 30-minute instructional class on safety and basics on operating a Ruger 10/22 semi-automatic rifle.

Assata R.

After the class, we filled 5 magazines with 5 bullets each and had a chance at firing on a target. To see how well I did (including video!!) look below…
