I've been to these sales and I don't think it's anything to get hyped about because they always only have the cheesiest, gaudiest slings and the cheapest looking sneakers in the largest sizes possible. BUT... if you're into that kind of thing, head over to your nearest Gucci store.

GUESS THAT SAMPLE??

Yea... that question mark is there for a reason. Sorry the posts have been so light lately but school is kinda kickin' my butt. Finals are no joke especially when you're trying not to settle for C's and D's.

Anyway... I freakin' LOVE THIS SONG!! I don't know if people outside of the tri-state area know who Maino is but I'm pretty sure if they didn't before, this will be the song that shoots him to "stardom" or "notoriety" or whatever.

via RusAzal
Now I put that question mark up there because this one is less of a guessing game and more of an informative post. The person who sampled the actual sample used in this song is still relevant and many of us were around when the other song was being played on the radio.

It was Mary J. Blige's "Be Happy" feat. Keith Murray but I'm sure you already knew that. Now of course, Mary's people didn't make that beat. They took it from Jimmy Spicer's (that kid J. Spice from Far Rock just came to mind) "Money (Dollar Bill Yall)". If you want to hear the original, click here. I figured out earlier today that Maino mentions the original in the first line of the song. I never really paid attention. Jus Blaze also used it in Carl Thomas' "My First Love".

so Real World...

is DEFINITELY coming to Brooklyn. smh... I just keep wondering where I'm going to go when I can not only no longer afford to live here, but when it becomes so "cool" to live here that it's "uncool" for the natives.

So far, MTV hasn't released the info on exactly where the Real World crew will live but I have money on Williamsburg or Clinton Hills. Watch them call Clinton Hills Fort Greene for some sort of "street cred" or something. We all know Clinton Hills isn't as dusty as Williamsburg so they have to make it more appealing (aka... dirt-ify it).

I thought that posting up what some other folks had to say about this would be WAY more interesting than posting any Real World related videos.

So yay, "Real World" castmembers! Welcome to my humble 'hood. Please feel free to ruin my favorite record store or punch me in the face at a bar. Be sure to pop your collars proudly and pull your skirts up with aplomb! Brooklyn will probably never be the same, but hey, it hasn't been the same in, like, a decade, so who gives a sh--? And to all my friends living in different corners of the globe: I've finally made it! And no, you can't sleep on my couch this summer. You'll just have to wait until the producers of "The Real World" decide to come to your lousy, two-bit town. Psssh, like that would ever happen. Losers. -- James Montgomery, MTV
In an inevitable, perhaps even overdue collision of reality and lifestyle, this morning MTV announced it has green-lighted the 21st season of The Real World. It will be filmed in Brooklyn, the reigning home turf of post-teen drama, and broadcast in 13 one-hour episodes in early 2009. No word yet regarding in which neighborhood the attention-seeking hopefuls will reside and manufacture identity-based conflict. We are hoping for the corner of Smith and Carroll but will also settle for Bedford and North Sixth. We would also like to see The Real World: East New York, where things start getting really real, and surely City Councilman Charles Barron of that neighborhood would assist with locations. God speed, young funny-haired applicants. -- Choire Sicha, The New York Observer

i just thought this.....

was funny.

New York City clubs really don't play when it comes to under age partiers. "X" definitely marks the kid who isn't 21 yet!

In case you couldn't tell who that was, it was cutie Tristan Wilds from "The Wire." He was at Chris Brown's birthday party at Rebel on 30th.

just a reminder....

that BibMe.org is here to help! It's now 5:27am and I've been up ALL night working on 3 papers (a total of.... 17 pages worth of info) and I am soooo glad that I found BibMe.org.

I didn't have to stress about how to do in-text citations (since I never remember how to do them) because BibMe can not only create your bibliography/works cited page for you, but also tells you how to do your in-text ciatations. And that's for any style; MLA, APA, or Chicago (w/e that is).

DON'T USE VALORE BOOKS!!!

This is a time when I'm glad I have a place to really speak my mind! I'm extremely upset with the textbook company Valore Books. I ordered a textbook from them on January 14 (the beginning of the Spring 2008 semester). I did NOT order an international copy and was not expecting one. When I got the book, it was NOT the same book pictured on the site. I kept the book and only opened it ONCE (or twice). Since I've been in college, I rarely use textbooks unless its for English class so it wasn't a surprise that I hadn't used the book.

It was not intentional that I decided to sell the book back to Valore Books now that it is the end of the semester and I am positive I will never use the book. The ISBN on the site matched the ISBN on the book I had, though, the picture on the site didn't match the cover of my book. I didn't think that would be an issue since when I first ordered the book back in January, I didn't receive the book pictured.

This is from the first e-mail I received where the issues started.

I sent an e-mail asking what was going on and they told me they don't accept international copies and would not issue me a check. I told them that was ridiculous since they sold me an international copy when I didn't ask for one. I also asked for them to send my book back to me. Here is what they said back.
Hello,

Thank you for contacting Valorebooks.com. If you would like to have your book back you would need to supply us with a payment in the amount of $5.00 to pay for the shipping costs back. We are not liable to pay for shipping back. Please let us know if you do want your book back within 30 days. After 30 days your item will be recycled. If you have any other questions feel free to contact us.

Best Regards,
Melissa

I am enraged to say the least. No matter how much money I have I REFUSE to let someone "beat me in the head!!!" If I wanted to pay for shipping, I wouldn't need the book back to re-sell. I'm not going to send them $5.00 so I can sell the book back for $10.00 when I paid $25.00 originally.

DON'T BUY FROM VALOREBOOKS.COM!!!!!
To see a little bit more, look below.

If you think I have a reason to be mad and are tired of dealing with these textbook companies who don't care that college students are broke and cant afford $100 textbooks every semester, re-post this and/or don't buy from Valore Books. I'm starting to think that stealing the books from the school book store is a good idea. They don't care about our wallets, so why should we care about theirs?

This was the book I ordered in January for my Managerial Communications class.

This is the book sloppy ValoreBooks.com sent me. I did not request an international copy (which this book is). I purchased the book pictured above and they sent me the book pictured below. When I attempted to sell the book pictured below back to them, they rejected it, refused to pay me, and wanted to charge me $5.00 to send the book back to me.

yesterday I told you guys about a NYTimes essay contest. Well... the contest is over. The winner was Marguerite Fields whose essay was entitled "Want to Be My Boyfriend? Please Define". I absolutely loved the title so I decided to read it. Here's a snippet from her essay.

So, a few days after the chat with my mom, when I found myself downtown drinking tea with my friend Steven, I asked him what he thought about dating. He has a long-term girlfriend, and I was curious how he viewed their relationship.

“The main thing,” he said, “is I don’t mind if she sleeps with other people. I mean, she’s not my property, right? I’m just glad I get to hang out with her. Spend time with her. Because that’s all we really have, you know? I don’t want her to be mine, and I don’t want to be anybody’s.” via NYTimes
Um hum... want to read more?

Marguerite Fields who is a junior at Marlboro College in Vermont had this to say.
As for the guys I first met in person, there was the construction worker I ran into on the train twice before saying anything, kissed the third time, kissed the fourth time, got stood up by the fifth time and never saw again. Then there was the guy with tattooed knuckles, the young Republican, the Irishman on vacation and the guy who stole $300 from me to buy drugs. There was the activist, the actor, the librarian, the waiter and the bond trader.

There was the guy who wore more makeup than I did, and the one who waxed his eyebrows clean off his face. And the one who slept with a guy when he was drunk, then with another when he was sober. (But he insisted he wasn’t gay, just curious, and since when was I so uptight anyway?) via NYTimes
This all seems too familiar. To read the rest, click here.

It''s been a while but....

I finally got another question from an anonymous reader.

Hey Assata this has nothing to do with this post but i am a fellow Baruch student about to enter my sophomore year i was wondering if you could tell me what professors were great and which ones can stay ??

Well, I'll be finishing up my sophomore year next week and it really sucks that I barely remember which professors I had last semester. Let's see.... I had Denise Patrick for COM 1010 my first year. Shes absolutely AMAZING!! She's the reason I decided to switch majors. If you try to find her on RateMyProfessor.com, you wont find her there. I don't know about her other students, but my class decided not to add her because we didn't want her sections to fill up fast if we had to take her again for another course. Linda Lopez, Brian Moore, and Carla Thompson are also good professors to have. All three of them are also in the communications department. I had David Sitt for Intro. to Psych last semester. I didn't do all that great but I enjoyed his class. It seemed like he wanted everyone to know and completely understand the material. I have Mary Ignagni (or something like that) for Psych. of Motivation now and she's really good. She wants us to understand the material also and her grading system is easy to understand. 5 quizzes and 3 exam; not cumulative. I took Hip-Hop Foundations during winter session in January. I can't remember my professors name but he was really good. As far as I know, there is only one Hip-Hop Foundations class, so if you decide to take it, you'll get the same professor I had. That class counted towards my cultural studies requirement and the same guy that teaches that course teaches other black studies courses.

I hope that helped. I didn't go back through my old schedules to find out who else I had. I figured if I can't remember who they were off of the top of my head, they probably weren't that great. I hope you're enjoying your stay at Baruch. If not... join the club! lol... jk jk

transportation in...

New York City is HORRIBLE!!

The New York Times did a story today on issues with the yellow taxis and the stupid credit card machines in them.

Sometimes the drivers never get paid, they said. Beresford Simmons, a driver,
testified that once his credit card machine malfunctioned, and the passenger
gave him all of her cash — $7 — though the fare was $45, and said she did not
want to drive around looking for an A.T.M. via NYTimes.com
Recently I took a taxi from Manhattan into Brooklyn and my mom told the driver to cut the machine off when he pulled in the driveway. As we're preparing to pay by card, the cab driver tells us we can't because he shut the machine off like an idiot. The whole thing was just really stupid. We argued with the driver for a while and he told us that he's not allowed to ask how a rider is paying. I don't know how true that is but here is a word of advice. If you pay by card in a yellow taxi in New York, make sure you tell the driver before the end of the ride.... unless it's the middle of the night. I hear these drivers aren't too fond of this pay by credit/debit system and might decline taking you where you need to go.

If it's not the subway it's something else. Transportation in NYC sucks!

not then, not now...

and unless plastic surgeons turn into real life miracle workers, not ever.

To read a bit more, look below.

I read on Miss Info's blog that Lil Kim (who is African-American) wanted Cuban-American Christina Milian to play her in the Biggie biopic. Is she serious? I don't know how true that is, but if it is, I'm worried. Miss Info also made reference to something called "Body Dysmorphic Disorder." I was curious as to what it was so I looked it up.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental disorder in which the affected person is excessively concerned about and preoccupied by an imagined or minor defect in his or her physical features.
Symptoms include but aren't limited to:
* Reassurance-seeking from loved ones.
* Obsessive viewing of favorite celebrities or models whom the person suffering from BDD wishes to resemble.
* Excessive grooming behaviors: picking, combing hair, plucking eyebrows, shaving, etc.
* Obsession with plastic surgery or multiple plastic surgeries, with little satisfactory results for the patient.
* In extreme cases, patients have attempted to perform plastic surgery on themselves, including liposuction and various implants with disastrous results. Patients have even tried to remove undesired features with a knife or other such tool when the center of the concern is on a point, such as a mole or other such feature in the skin.
via Wikipedia
In the case that Lil Kim wanting Milian to play her is true, either Kim is sick or just delusional. Its scary. Women, please raise your girls.
