i'm a terrible....

student. It's 11:01. I should have been in bed an hour ago and I haven't read anything for my classes tomorrow. I have done like 3 blogs for the night, spent 4 hours talking about nothing with everyone online, and watched a repeat of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. I'm going to flunk out.

Anyway.... this is hilarious. If Jay-Z and Beyoncé were to get married and actually invite people, this is probably what the wedding planner would have to go through.

I just want to....

congratulate RAHSAAN once again for winning the award for BEST MALE SOLO PERFORMER FOR 2007!!!

I told you guys I managed to make it to Sputnik the Sunday before last and of course... Rahsaan performed. I think my favorite part of his performance was the only part that I did NOT record. Yea I know... I'm a genius. Luckily for you, I got Justin to send me the song so you guys can hear it here.

This post wouldn't be complete without a video of Rahsaan performing. Peep this. This might have been my second favorite song for the night.
video

This post is going to be EXTRA long. Rahsaan was also on TreazyRadioShow recently. I'm listening to it as I'm writing this. So far he's spoke about growing up with 2 brothers in hip-hop and designing for MECCA. You can listen to the rest of the interview here.

And if you want to congratulate Rahsaan on your own, you can hit him up on his blog at AFlyGuy.com.

{UPDATE} does anyone remember...

this?

Erykah Badu - Next Lifetime

I've had Baduizm on repeat all day.

UPDATE...
So Cat Hill of Ear Hustling commented and asked if I'd seen Honey (Erykah Badu's latest video). I didn't watch it because I hate listening to newly released music or watching newly released music videos when everyone is still talking about it. I can't really explain why, that's just how I am. Anyway, I watched the video and I thought it was pretty cool. I liked the whole album cover thing because it got my brain moving thinking about which album covers she used. One day when I'm bored at work, I'll do a post with all the covers.

Honey

The thing that got me was at the end of the video where it's like... support record stores. The point of doing that would be so that the record labels and artists or whoever can make money because when we download, they lose out. I'm wondering, why doesn't everyone do what Radiohead did?
"Radiohead's seventh album, In Rainbows, was released in October 2007 as a digital download for which customers chose their own price. Although it was reported that 1.2 million digital downloads were sold by the day of the album's release, Radiohead's management have not released official sales figures, claiming that the Internet-only distribution was intended to boost sales of the physical album. Yet according to Yorke, Radiohead's profits from the digital download of In Rainbows outstripped combined profits from digital downloads of all of the band's other studio albums."
via Wikipedia (which means this info could be TOTALLY wrong but whatever.... you get the idea)
I don't think I've ever heard anything from Radiohead and it would be unfair for me to present this idea to you as if it were my own. Lucky for you, I couldn't steal the video code, so you don't have to sit through yet ANOTHER J Smooth video clip. But, for those of you who care, this is where I got the idea from.

has anyone seen...

this?

The commercial that I saw wasn't this exact one. In the one I saw, the guy is rubbing a sneaker on his forehead. smh

It's just like these ANNOYING Head On commercials.

SIDEBAR...
While searching for the Zoo York commercial, I found this audition video. I don't know who did this or if they were serious but the guy using it as chap stick was funny.

for those of you....

sneaker fanatics, the McFly2015 people are really going in. They found the patents for the McFly sneakers that were made up in 1992. Heres was Neatorama had to say.

"Back in 1990, NIKE Inc. filed two patents for the futuristic-looking sneakers Marty McFly wears during the year-2015 scene in Back to the Future 2, which basically means that NIKE were seriously thinking about releasing the McFLY 2015 sneakers."

For more info on the progress McFly2015 is making click here.
"The McFLY 2015 project is a grassroots movement to get Nike to make available to consumers the futuristic-looking sneakers seen in the 1989 movie Back to the Future Part 2."

okay... this will ABSOLUTELY

be my LAST J Smooth posting for another 2 weeks {unless he says something else that I think is important enough to repost}.

I just thought this was funny. I tell my mom all the time not to watch Fox news because it is nothing but propaganda. I'm right. I know I'm right. But it seems like everyone is in the same business of selling you BS. Everyone else just makes it that much harder to identify what the BS really is. Who exactly are they trying to fool?

I also found this video interesting because I ummm... watch wrestling. Yeah I already know it's fake and yada yada yada but I don't have cable in my room and my tv stays on channel 11 so what can I do? WWE SMACKDOWN really isn't so bad.

GUESS THAT SAMPLE!

Yup... it's been a week already and it's time for the second installment of GUESS THAT SAMPLE!!

Now I was going to try to make this one hard but I really do like this song. It actually was a challenge for me because I JUST figured out what song was sampled to do the remake. For all you music enthusiasts (like the good people over at Crown Entertainment who heckled me last week), don't play anymore than the first 30 seconds of the video.

Did you figure it out? If not, click here.

i know this is....

like the millionth video I've posted in like 3 days but so what. I keep finding interesting stuff.

Nicolas was checking my blog and asked me about this Rik Cordero guy. I've heard his name before but I don't know who he is or what he does or whatever. Rik Cordero directed the Joel Ortiz video I posted last night. He had me check out this site... Three21media.com. Then he linked me to this video which I liked. Rik Cordero directed it. Check it out.

A.P. - Keep Trying

In other music news, Dime Piece, the female street wear brand has put together a mixtape with a few of my FAVORITE songs.

Nasty Girl by Vanity 6 and My Boo by Ghost Town is also on her. You can download the whole mixtape here. You can hit me up for the track listing because I don't feel like posting it here.

for all of you who....

go away to school, mtvU is looking for campus reps.

"An ideal candidate knows their campus and the local scene. As a Campus Rep, we need you to keep your finger on the pulse of music and entertainment in your market, as well as know the latest hot spots and restaurants for your campus. Ideal reps are up to date on the latest in music and pop culture news, hi-tech gadgets, gaming, trends and more."
I posted this especially or those of you who go away to school because I know some campuses play mtvU non-stop in common areas like the cafeteria or student union. The only thing we have at my school is the radio station and we don't even get good reception in our own lunch room.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Maryland College Park, and Rutgers are just a few of the participating colleges. Check out this link for more info. I've had the pleasure of dealing with these mtvU people before and I'm telling you... if you don't go to any of the school listed but you think you should be involved, LET THEM KNOW!

it's about....

that time again. I have some friends who started classes already. For CUNY students, like me, hell classes start tomorrow. UGH! I have a close to perfect schedule, so I don't have to go back until Monday.

Here's a tip for those of you who don't steal your textbooks from where ever you can. Instead of running to the school bookstore and spending 3 times as much for textbooks, get the ISBN's for the books you need, and google them. You can find different sites who have the books you need for cheaper. You can also google the sites to get coupon codes for free shipping. You guys know I'm always looking for a deal so here are a few of the sites I used this semester.

Half.com This site is run by eBay.
Powells.com I ended up not really using this site because after checking their inventory, they realized they didn't have the book I ordered.
TextbooksRUs.com
ValoreBooks.com
AllBookStores.com This site allows you to compare prices. It's not the site that I used but it looks just as good.

so class ended....

one week ago and I got my grade the day before yesterday. I GOT AN A!!!!!!! Yes I'm bragging because I haven't gotten that many since I've been at Baruch so each one is a major accomplishment for me.

Here's what my professor {and author of the above book} had to say:

"So, as you probably know by now, you did very well in the class...So there's not much to comment on in the paper; it was well-written & I thought the examples supported your thesis very clearly."
OHHHH YEAAA!!! If anyone is looking to buy a paper on hip-hop, I'm selling to the highest bidder!

In other music related news, I'm back to listening to Parlé Radio. I had to take a 3 week break because of my class but I'll be tuning in tonight and you should too. The show streams live at 7pm and ends at 9pm. I spoke with Kevin, the creator and host and he said they'll be talking about politics, morals and ethics. Always interesting. If you miss them this week, you can catch them every Thursday right here.

For a few reasons I won't disclose right now, this guys performance REALLY reminded me of my grandfather. Kinda weird and cool at the same time. If you want to learn more about Sandman and his music, you can go to HomeboySandman.com.

went to Sputnik in my pajamas. I like that it's so close to home. I went to see Rahsaan perform and I ended up staying the whole night. I took so many pics and video footage that it's too much for one post. Instead I'm going to break it up into a few post so everyone will get there shine.

Throughout the night there was a young lady painting near the side of the stage named Fly Lady Di. Here are some pics of her work as it progressed through the night.

Pretty! I love color. Thank you very much Justin and Rahsaan for taking pics for me.

UPDATE...
Miss Fly Lady Di will either be painting and promoting her art work at this event tonight.

let's play a game of....

GUESS THAT TUNE SAMPLE!! I've always wanted to do a weekly music thing here but I have uhh.... commitment issues. I normally don't post in any type of order. I write what I want when I want because it's hard for me to follow rules and patterns and yada yada yada. BUT, I think I can keep up with this. If I forget to post a song, I'm sure someone will remind me.

I'm going to start you guys off kind of slow and give you a song that has been sampled recently and is fairly easy to identify. Have fun and LEARN SOMETHING!

Now who sampled that?

so i'm looking....

into this Mac stuff now. Apple sends me these e-mail updates at least once a week which are annoying informative. I know I'm late with the MacBook Air but I wanted to look into it a little further before I decided to post or not.

The most appealing feature so far is the size. It weighs less than a 5lb bag of Domino Sugar and is about as flat as my RAZR (V3t). YES... all of my measurements are relative. That's the only way things make sense to me. The thing that I don't like is that it doesn't have a disc drive (or whatever the tech term is for the thing you put cd's in). I don't care enough to try to explain to you how this thing is supposed to work especially since you can watch a video of an Apple geek employee explaining here.

And I see Apple is also jumping in on the competition between Blockbuster and Netflix with their own movie rental features.

"Buy and rent movies from the iTunes Store and watch them on your computer, then sync them to your iPod or iPhone. Movie rentals are $3.99 for new releases and $2.99 for library titles. Rent a movie and you have 30 days to start watching it. Hit Play, and you have 24 hours to finish it — or watch it as many times as you want. Movie rentals disappear when they expire, so they won’t take up storage space." -- via Apple (of course)

And by the way world.... I HAVE HBO ONCE AGAIN!!!!!!! Now I can finally catch up with The Wire. I haven't seen it since like... the second season. If anyone has past seasons on dvd's, I'd love to borrow them. I miss the show and I hear this season is supposed to be really good.

in hip-hop news....

Kool Herc, the father of hip-hop is trying to help purchase the housing project at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Boogie Down Bronx. Here's an excerpt via AllHipHop.com:

"Legendary Hip-Hop co-founder DJ Kool Herc is joining forces with US Senator Charles Schumer and residents of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue to unveil a tenant-sponsored plan to buy the affordable housing project.

The 1520 Sedgwick Avenue tenants, along with Schumer and DJ Kool Herc, will reveal their financial and long term ownership plan for the preservation of the project at a press conference."
In other news, Rahsaan will be receiving an award at the 1st Annual Underground and Indie (U-N-I) Award Show for BEST MALE SOLO PERFORMER for 2007.

A couple of months ago, I posted a video of Rahsaan performing a song he'd written about his brother. It was rather emotional and I think you can see why he deserves the award. In case you missed the original post, here's the video again.

I'm still up....

because I keep finding more and more things to write about. Thursday was my last day of winter session classes. I'm kinda sad it's over ONLY because the class was cool. I'm so glad I don't have to think about school work for another week. Anyway... on the last day, my professor decided to show Block Party... that Dave Chappelle movie that came out a few years ago. I had just moved to this neighborhood that summer and I was around when it happened, but somehow I missed it anyway. I was so disappointed that I refused to watch the movie when it came out. I'm glad I did see it though.

Here's a clip of one of my fav performances for the night.

Watching the movie has me looking forward to all the things Summer '08 has in store. All the block parties, bbq's, the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival....

in New York this week, you're in luck. Restaurant week starts on Monday, January 21, 2008 and ends on Friday, February 1, 2008. Weekends are excluded. I think the purpose of restaurant week is supposed to get people to go out and patronize restaurants throughout the city. The restaurants lower their meal prices to get people to come out but not every restaurant participates. For a full listing, click here.

I don't think I've been to any of the restaurants listed but if I'm lucky, I'll be able to make it out sometime during the week. For anyone who is a Sex and the City enthusiast, Il Cantinori is one of the participating restaurants. I won't explain that one any further. lol... for those of you who are lost, click here.

those close to me....

know that one of my talents is finding a good deal and I found a GREAT one on Sunday. A few months ago, I got an e-mail from a company called Piperlime. They're an online shoe retailer and they're apart of The Gap. Since they're under The Gap's umbrella, you can use your Gap card to make purchases. If you sign up for the e-mail list, you'll also find out about their sales and you'll get discount codes and blah blah blah....

They also have this thing called price match where if you find the same shoes on another site for cheaper, Piperlime will sell them to you for the discounted price. I ordered a pair of sandals this weekend and I didn't pay taxes, shipping & handling, and I got a price match. An amazing deal! My package came today and it looked so pretty in the box so I took a couple of pics.

They wrapped the shoe box in brown paper and put a sticker on it! They folded the invoice up and put it in a green envelope with a card that said Thanks for shopping with us, we appreciate you, yada yada yada....

And these are my shoes! I won't be able to wear them the way I want until it gets warmer but I'll definitely be taking them with me to Trindad in.... 64 days. Yes I'm counting! I need a vacation.

and all his antics but this was kinda funny. I may regret saying this later but when "Superman" or "You" or whatever the name of that song is came out, I had the girls at work show me the dance. Of course I couldn't remember it so I youtube'd it and learned the dance from there. Then I showed my mom how to do it. After I told her what the song was really saying, she refused to do the dance anymore. I completely understand why. Anyway... that old lady is good because I didn't even get that far with the dance. smh
